Barcelona will have nearly 400 climate shelters ready for summer 2026, with free cool spaces within a 10-minute walk of every home, according to the Ajuntament de Barcelona and the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The network includes libraries, museums, swimming pools, sports centres, parks and civic centres. Some venues charge for general entry, but each one offers a designated area where people can cool down for free.

The city says the network grew in 2025 with 26 new facilities, and five more libraries will open during August. That will add to summer coverage across all neighbourhoods.

Most shelters are local public facilities. Barcelona lists 126 senior centres and civic centres, 47 parks and gardens with shaded areas, 55 swimming pools and 52 libraries among the cooling points. Other sites include sports centres, schools, nurseries, museums and district offices. Some shelters stay open all summer, while others only open on certain days or weeks, so residents should check the official schedule before going.

By district, Sant Martí has 54 shelters, followed by Eixample with 47. Horta-Guinardó and Sants-Montjuïc each have 45, while Ciutat Vella has 41. Other districts include Sant Andreu with 38, Nou Barris with 41, Les Corts with 29, Gràcia with 26, and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi with 25.

Residents can check the official map and opening times on the Ajuntament de Barcelona website. For more local coverage, see our community and sport pages.
