Catalonia railway services are undergoing a significant transformation with new train deployments that promise to revolutionise commuter transport across the region.

According to recent announcements, Barcelona’s Rodalies network will receive 72 new 100-metre trains from Alstom’s Santa Perpètua factory, marking a strategic shift from originally planned 200-metre models.
The decision, coordinated with the Generalitat, focuses on operational flexibility rather than sheer size.

These shorter trains can operate individually during off-peak hours or couple together during rush periods, effectively creating double-length formations when demand requires. Consequently, this approach allows for more responsive service adjustments throughout the day.

The new fleet will increase seating capacity by 36% on Rodalies services and 17% on Regional routes without requiring additional train frequency. This is particularly crucial given the network’s current saturation levels. Furthermore, maintenance efficiency improves significantly – if a technical issue arises, only the affected 100-metre unit needs withdrawal rather than an entire 200-metre train.
Renfe spokesperson Antonio Carmona confirmed production is progressing well, with the first units expected to enter service early next year pending final safety approvals. “The objective is that during peak hours all trains will be double formations,” he stated, highlighting the strategic advantage of the flexible approach.
This railway enhancement forms part of broader transport improvements across the region, complementing other infrastructure projects like the ongoing tram works at Glories. The coordination between different transport modes reflects comprehensive urban planning efforts throughout Barcelona.
The modernisation extends beyond Barcelona’s commuter network, with 38 new CAF trains destined for Regional services. Fourteen of these will feature variable gauge capability specifically for the R16 Tortosa line, demonstrating the tailored approach to different route requirements across Catalonia.
Perhaps most significantly, the new fleet replaces trains dating back 40-50 years that have frequently suffered reliability issues. This generational upgrade should deliver substantial improvements in service consistency and potentially attract more passengers to public transport options.
The contract includes a 15% expansion clause, providing flexibility for additional train acquisitions in future. However, this potential growth would require new maintenance facilities to support the expanded fleet, indicating long-term planning for continued Catalonia railway development.
