Barcelona City Council has significantly expanded its Concilia childcare programme, adding three new service points and increasing the citywide total to 15. Fundación Pere Tarrés manages this crucial expansion, which officially starts on Monday, 4 May, though one new location will open in September.
The new locations include Barceloneta in the Ciutat Vella district, Poble-sec in Sants-Montjuïc, and Roquetes within Nou Barris. These additions aim to provide greater access to quality childcare for families across the city's diverse neighbourhoods.
The Concilia programme specifically prioritises single-mother families, survivors of gender violence, and families without strong community support networks. It offers children a quality educational experience, focusing on co-education, environmental awareness, and emotional development.
Expanding Childcare Access Across Barcelona
The Ajuntament awarded the new contract to Fundación Pere Tarrés. This contract carries an annual cost of 1,669,028 euros. This represents an increase of 349,000 euros per year, reflecting the programme's growth and enhanced services. The Dirección de Feminismos, Transversalidad de Género y LGTBI will manage the service under this new agreement.
The service operates daily from Monday to Saturday, outside regular school hours. Children can attend in the afternoons during the week and all day on Saturdays. This schedule helps parents balance work and family responsibilities.
Supporting Women and Families
Concilia's primary goal is to help women access vocational training and employment opportunities. It also aims to support their career progression and job retention. This initiative directly addresses barriers many women face in the labour market.
Additionally, the programme ensures women have personal time, allowing them to participate fully in community life. This strengthens their active role within society. It also promotes the well-being of family units and offers quality leisure spaces for children.
Neighbourhoods Benefiting from Concilia
With these expansions, the Concilia childcare programme now serves 15 points across Barcelona. These include El Raval and the new Barceloneta point in Ciutat Vella. Sants-Montjuïc now has La Marina, Badal, and the new Poble-sec location.
Horta-Guinardó benefits from the El Carmel point. Nou Barris includes La Prosperitat, the new Roquetes site, Zona Nord, and Turó i Can Peguera. Sant Andreu covers Trinitat Vella, Bon Pastor, and El Congrés i els Indians.
Finally, Sant Martí offers services in El Besòs i el Maresme and La Verneda i la Pau. The ongoing expansion of the Concilia programme shows the city's commitment to supporting its residents.
The Barcelona City Council expects the expanded Concilia programme to continue providing essential support to vulnerable families. This ongoing effort helps create a more equitable and supportive urban environment for everyone.
