Mayor Jaume Collboni announced the tribute during a Catalunya Ràdio podcast, describing it as recognition for the artists behind Barcelona’s 1992 Olympic anthem.
The statue will commemorate their iconic duet ‘Barcelona’, which became the official song of the 1992 Summer Olympics. Furthermore, the artwork aims to capture the city’s Olympic spirit that defined a generation. Collboni emphasised that Barcelona had an ‘outstanding debt’ to both artists for their cultural contribution.

Freddie Mercury statue honours Olympic legacy
This isn’t the first time Collboni has pushed for permanent recognition of the musical partnership. Consequently, back in 2018, he proposed naming streets after both artists that would intersect at Glòries Park. The current statue proposal represents a continuation of this long-standing commitment.
The artistic design remains pending development, with city officials yet to announce a timeline for its creation. However, the location in the transformed Glòries Park provides a fitting backdrop. Additionally, the park’s recent renovation aligns with Barcelona’s ongoing urban improvements, including the extensive Rambla regeneration project.
According to the Barcelona City Council, the tribute will celebrate more than just musical achievement. It will symbolise the city’s international spirit during a transformative period. The 1992 Olympics marked Barcelona’s emergence as a global destination, with Mercury and Caballé’s collaboration capturing that moment perfectly.
Meanwhile, the announcement comes as Barcelona continues to enhance its cultural offerings. The city recently celebrated other major events, including the successful La Mercè and BAM festivals that filled the city with music. Therefore, this new statue adds to Barcelona’s rich tapestry of cultural landmarks.
The Freddie Mercury statue will join other recent cultural developments in celebrating Barcelona’s artistic heritage. Ultimately, it represents a permanent tribute to one of music’s most unforgettable collaborations and its enduring connection to the city.
