Egg prices soar across Barcelona as new data reveals consumers are now paying 60% more than farmers receive for their products.

Egg Prices Soar Amid Growing Consumer Concerns
The agricultural organisation COAG has been tracking this concerning trend through their monthly IPOD indicator, which measures the difference between farmgate prices and retail costs.

Their latest figures show a dramatic shift in the egg market. Meanwhile, the ongoing bird flu situation has complicated matters further, requiring poultry confinement measures across affected regions.
In January 2025, farmers received €1.74 per dozen eggs while consumers paid €2.40 at retail outlets. This represented a 38% markup. However, by October, the farmgate price had risen to €1.97 per dozen while retail prices jumped to €3.15, creating that 60% difference that’s causing concern among consumer groups.
Furthermore, wholesale prices have continued climbing in recent weeks. The reference market in Bellpuig currently shows large eggs selling for €2.58 per dozen, representing a 12% increase from just two months ago when they were priced at €2.32. This ongoing escalation comes despite Spain’s agricultural minister Luis Planas assuring there’s no risk of egg shortages.
Spain maintains a production surplus of approximately 120% of domestic consumption, with the excess being exported. Nevertheless, the combination of supply chain pressures and broader economic challenges affecting household budgets has made the egg price situation particularly noticeable for Barcelona residents.
The Catalan Department of Agriculture has responded by holding emergency meetings with poultry sector representatives to reinforce biosecurity measures. Although Catalonia hasn’t reported any bird flu outbreaks, officials are implementing stricter protocols and additional complementary measures to prevent potential spread.
This price situation reflects wider patterns affecting food affordability in the region. Consequently, consumers face difficult choices as essential food items become increasingly expensive, adding pressure to household budgets already stretched by rising living costs across multiple sectors.
