Barcelona's El Born district will host the central event of Correllengua Agermanat 2026 on Tuesday, 21st April, at 19:45. Marta Salicrú, Commissioner for the Social Use of Catalan, will participate in the celebration at Plaça Comercial, marking the flame's arrival in the city.
City Council Funds Language Promotion
The Barcelona City Council supports this significant cultural initiative with a €15,000 grant. This funding forms part of an agreement with the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) for the 'Joves i Català' (Youth and Catalan) project. This project aims to promote language activities co-created by young people.
Passeig del Born will feature various popular cultural displays throughout the afternoon. Following the flame's arrival, attendees will hear a manifesto reading and enjoy a concert by the Ontinyent-based group, Auxili. The event carries the slogan 'Sí a la llengua', meaning 'Yes to the language'.
Celebrating Catalan Linguistic Heritage
The Correllengua Agermanat 2026 is a wide-ranging initiative spanning over 1,500 kilometres. It passes through dozens of municipalities across the entire Catalan linguistic domain. This includes areas from Prada in France to Alghero in Sardinia, Italy.
The event highlights the importance of the Catalan language, spoken by millions across Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, and other territories. For Barcelona residents and expats, these events offer a direct connection to the region's rich cultural heritage. They also provide opportunities to engage with local traditions.
The City Council's continued support for initiatives like Correllengua underscores its commitment to linguistic promotion. Such events ensure the vitality of Catalan for future generations in Barcelona and beyond. They also foster community engagement through shared cultural experiences.
