Barcelona will host its first major croquette festival, Croqueta Crush, at Poble Espanyol from 22 to 25 May. Organisers expect to serve over 10,000 croquettes daily, offering a new culinary experience for residents and visitors.
Following a successful run in Seville, the festival arrives in the Catalan capital, blending culinary competition with entertainment and live music. This event marks another addition to Barcelona's expanding calendar of gastronomic celebrations.
Attendees can sample more than 14 distinct croquette varieties and seven special tapas from local establishments, according to Official Croqueta Crush Festival. The festival aims to elevate the humble croquette, a beloved staple in Spanish cuisine, into a gourmet product.
Visitors will also vote for their favourite croquette, deciding Barcelona's best under the slogan “You try, you vote.” This interactive element encourages engagement and friendly competition among the participating chefs.
Creative Croquette Flavours on Offer
The festival will feature both classic recipes and bold, new flavour combinations, moving beyond traditional ham or stew versions. Highlights include croquettes made with Peking duck, offering an international twist.
Other inventive options include ribeye steak and bone marrow, showcasing rich, savoury profiles. Additionally, visitors can try pulled pork smoked for 12 hours, providing a deep, smoky taste.
Further unique varieties include chorizo with Camembert cheese and honey, blending sweet and savoury notes. Gorgonzola croquettes and red prawn with sriracha mayonnaise also feature, appealing to diverse palates. This wide selection shows the croquette's versatility and potential for culinary innovation.
Poble Espanyol Hosts Entertainment and Family Activities
Croqueta Crush offers more than just food tasting. The organisers have planned live concerts and DJ sets, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the weekend.
Cocktail workshops will also take place, allowing attendees to learn new skills. Family activities ensure entertainment for all ages, making it a destination for everyone.
Poble Espanyol, a significant architectural museum and open-air venue, continues its role as a key entertainment hub in Barcelona. Located on Montjuïc, this site regularly hosts cultural and gastronomic events, attracting thousands of visitors. It has recently hosted other popular themed food events focusing on pizzas, burgers, tacos, and croissants, proving its suitability for large-scale public gatherings.
Festival Schedule and Entry Details
The festival runs for four days, from Friday, 22 May, to Monday, 25 May. On Friday, it opens from 18:00 until midnight, allowing for an evening start.
Saturday and Sunday hours are from 12:00 to 00:00, offering full-day access. On Monday, the event concludes earlier, closing at 21:00.
Entry to the festival is free until capacity is reached, making it accessible to many. However, tasting packs and consumption vouchers will be available for purchase, allowing attendees to conveniently try various options. These packs often provide better value for those planning to sample multiple croquettes.
With this new addition, Barcelona reinforces its position as a leading Spanish city for themed gastronomic festivals. These events, often linked to specific products and widely shared on social media, continue to grow in popularity. They enhance the city's vibrant culinary scene for both residents and tourists.
