The Barcelona Provincial Council (Diputació de Barcelona) has unveiled a comprehensive new Barcelona cycling tourism strategy at the 46th Fitur International Tourism Fair in Madrid. With the region set to host the Tour de France Grand Départ later this year, authorities are seizing the opportunity to showcase the province as a premier destination for sports and sustainable travel. This initiative aims to transform major event interest into long-term economic benefits.
Capitalising on the Grand Départ for Cycling Tourism
The prestigious cycling race will pass through the province of Barcelona between 4 and 6 July 2026. Therefore, the Provincial Council aims to transform the massive media attention into a long-term economic driver. By highlighting specialised accommodation and extensive cycling routes, they hope to present the region as an ideal hub for enthusiasts. This major event is a cornerstone of the city’s future plans, as seen with the Tour de France’s inclusion in the 2026 Olympic Ring programme.

Representatives at the fair explained their primary challenge. They aim to turn the “media interest in the Tour into a window that shows the potential of sports, cultural, and sustainable tourism in the province.”
Beyond Cycling: A Broader Cultural and Natural Offer
While the Tour de France serves as the headline hook, the council’s presentation at Fitur emphasises a broader cultural offering. The year 2026 marks the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death. Consequently, the province is using this milestone to spotlight its modernist architectural heritage. The city is preparing for significant cultural events related to the centenary of Gaudí’s death.
In addition, the promotional campaign features the region’s “Vies Blaves” (Blue Ways). These paths along riverbanks are designed for hiking and cycling. The campaign also highlights rich enogastronomy and local olive oil production. Meanwhile, the council is drawing attention to the solar eclipse predicted for 12 August 2026. They position it as a unique natural spectacle for summer visitors.
An Immersive Experience Showcasing the Cycling Tourism Strategy
The campaign is currently on display at the Destination Barcelona space in Pavilion 7 of the Ifema Madrid Fairgrounds (Stand 7B-10 Catalunya). Shared with Turisme de Barcelona, the stand operates under the slogan “This is Barcelona”. This targeted promotion comes as the city introduces tools like Barcelona’s new tourist density index to better manage visitor numbers.
The exhibit features a large open plan area equipped with multiple screens and VR headsets. Visitors can enjoy an immersive experience projecting images of daily street life, modernist landmarks, natural spaces, and the very cycling routes that will soon welcome the world’s elite riders.
