Barcelona Design Week is celebrating its 20th edition until 17th October, with 130 activities filling Barcelona that showcase design as a tool for resilience in uncertain times. Design is presented as a way to find resilient solutions in the face of technological, economic, geopolitical and environmental disruptions, through informed and pragmatic optimism. Organisers have programmed exhibitions, conferences, round tables and workshops for both professional and general audiences.

At the Museu del Disseny-DHub, the official headquarters, the exhibition Inspired in Barcelona: Luce stands out. It comes directly from Milan Design Week with unique lighting pieces focused on self-produced projects. Also at the DHub you can see Materia Prima, an initiative to develop final degree or master’s projects that reflect on materiality and sustainability.

In the Gancedo shop on Carrer Pau Claris 115, the Tela Cliente lamp is exhibited. Interior designer Alfons Tost has re-edited it, with geometric forms and textile finish that allows infinite aesthetic possibilities, including interactive templates to create your own versions.

Barcelona Design Week lighting innovations

Simon, a leading company in electrical systems, offers the Ilumina2 family workshop in its new headquarters in 22@. The workshop takes place at La Casa de la Llum, where through play visitors explore how light transforms spaces and materials. In the Off BDW, at La Culture House in Eixample, Life in Light is presented – a collaboration between the duo Eliurpi and LedsC4 that explores the poetry of light combined with textile materials.

They’re creating textile sculptures inspired by Mediterranean algae that beautify and illuminate spaces, bringing warmth and harmony. The focus on lighting throughout Barcelona Design Week reflects growing interest in how design can address energy efficiency whilst creating beautiful, functional spaces.

The 20th anniversary edition marks two decades of Barcelona’s commitment to design excellence. The city has long been recognised as a global design capital, with the Design Week serving as a showcase for both established names and emerging talent. This year’s emphasis on resilient design solutions addresses pressing challenges facing cities worldwide.
