Mossos d'Esquadra officers seized three handguns during early morning raids on drug flats in Barcelona's Sant Martí district on Wednesday, 29 April, El Caso reported. The operation led to the arrest of five individuals on Ferrer Bassa street in the Besòs neighbourhood, where police also found over €20,000 in cash and various quantities of drugs.
The arrested individuals include two Spanish nationals, one Venezuelan, and two Moroccan individuals. Police accuse them of belonging to a network primarily selling cocaine, alongside other illicit substances. The simultaneous judicial entries involved agents from the Mossos' ARRO unit, who conducted the assaults. They received support from the Guàrdia Urbana de Barcelona.
Investigators found that the flats not only distributed drugs but also allowed on-site consumption. This activity significantly increased local degradation and generated numerous neighbour complaints. The presence of these drug flats directly impacts the quality of life for residents in the Besòs neighbourhood. The three drug flats were all located on the same street, suggesting a coordinated criminal structure within this part of the Besòs.
Drug Flats Spread Beyond City Centre
This police action confirms a trend investigators have observed for some time. Drug flats are no longer concentrated solely in central Barcelona areas. They have expanded into other neighbourhoods, including Sant Martí, a district home to over 240,000 residents. The Besòs neighbourhood, specifically, often faces socio-economic challenges and is considered a vulnerable community. These environments offer new opportunities for drug operations with less direct police pressure compared to more scrutinised central zones. This shift presents new challenges for law enforcement and local authorities.
Firearms Discovery Raises Concerns
The discovery of three firearms during the raids particularly surprised investigators. This finding is unusual for drug consumption flats. Historically, such locations were less associated with armed individuals. Increasing tension and clashes between rival drug trafficking clans have led to heightened protection measures for dealers. They are arming themselves to defend against hostile actions or drug robberies. This development poses a serious public safety risk. The ongoing investigation by the Mossos d'Esquadra aims to clarify each detainee's specific role within the organisation. It will also determine if more individuals are involved in this criminal network.
The operation underscores the evolving nature of drug trafficking in Barcelona. It highlights the growing presence of weapons in these illicit operations. Authorities continue their efforts to dismantle these networks and address the associated public safety concerns for residents and visitors alike.
