Over 300,000 vehicles returned to the Barcelona metropolitan area between Sunday at 12:00 and Easter Monday at 10:00. This represents more than half of the total expected in the ongoing Easter return operation for 2026. The Servei Català de Trànsit reported that 303,494 vehicles had re-entered the metropolitan area by Monday morning. This figure accounts for 51.4% of the 590,000 vehicles anticipated to return by midnight on Monday. By 20:00 on Sunday, 180,000 vehicles had already returned, causing significant traffic jams. Drivers experienced retentions up to 10 kilometres long on key routes leading into the city. The Barcelona metropolitan area is home to over 3.3 million residents, making efficient traffic management vital.

Extensive Police Presence and Controls
The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s police force, deployed 1,669 agents for the special Easter traffic operation. These officers conducted 1,038 controls across both major and secondary roads. The extensive presence aimed to ensure road safety during the busy holiday period. Controls included 301 for alcohol and drugs, targeting impaired driving. Additionally, 209 checks focused on driver distractions, such as mobile phone use. Another 134 controls specifically monitored vehicle speed.
Furthermore, police carried out 148 passive safety checks, ensuring seatbelt use and child restraint systems. They also conducted 141 motorcycle inspections and 105 transport-related controls. Ten mobile radar carts were strategically positioned on the AP-7 motorway to deter and detect speeding. This major artery connects Barcelona with other parts of Catalonia and Spain. Two helicopters also monitored high-traffic routes from above, detecting various infractions and providing real-time traffic information.
Easter Holiday Traffic Management
The Easter holiday period traditionally sees a significant exodus from Barcelona. Many residents travel to coastal towns or rural areas across Catalonia and beyond. This annual return operation is crucial for managing the influx of vehicles back into the metropolitan area. Authorities implement special measures to alleviate congestion and enhance safety for all road users. The coordinated effort involves multiple agencies working together. These measures help minimise disruption for both returning travellers and local residents.
The comprehensive return operation, which began on Sunday, concludes at midnight on Easter Monday. Authorities continue to manage traffic flow as residents return from the extended holiday period. Drivers should remain vigilant and follow all traffic regulations. The aim is to ensure a safe and smooth conclusion to the Easter travel period for everyone.
