Early days of the festive period have brought a distinctly wintry feel to Catalonia. A Mediterranean low-pressure system combined with northerly winds has caused cloudy intervals and strong gusts across the region.
Some areas, including the Pyrenees and Empordà, have experienced wind speeds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour. Barcelona city itself has seen weak or intermittent rainfall, affecting outdoor activities.
Cool Start to Easter Week
This meteorological variability is typical for late March and early April in Catalonia. It marks a transitional period often featuring cold fronts, Mediterranean depressions, and episodes of strong wind and precipitation.
The current forecast suggests a higher probability of isolated showers, particularly in inland and pre-coastal areas of Catalonia. While AEMET does not expect continuous heavy rain in the Catalan capital, the risk of days with isolated showers or significant cloud cover remains elevated.
This changeable weather could impact outdoor plans for Barcelona’s 1.6 million residents and the numerous tourists visiting for the holidays. Many traditional Easter processions and outdoor gatherings will take place during this important religious and cultural period.
Improved Conditions Expected
AEMET’s initial predictions indicate an improvement towards the main Easter Week days. Good Friday and the festive weekend could see calmer weather with a lower probability of precipitation across Barcelona.
This potential shift towards clearer skies offers a more optimistic outlook for the peak holiday period. However, meteorological forecasts can evolve significantly as specific dates approach, influencing travel and leisure plans.
AEMET consistently recommends following daily updates for the most precise planning. Such updates are crucial for anyone organising activities during the holiday period.
Wednesday’s Specific Forecast
For Wednesday, 1 April, Barcelona awoke to clear skies and a bright start. AEMET expects this sunny outlook to continue until midday, offering pleasant morning conditions.
From midday onwards, skies will become increasingly overcast across the city. The afternoon will then bring abundant clouds and scarce precipitation, suggesting a damp but not heavily wet period.
Temperatures on Wednesday will reach a maximum of 18 degrees Celsius, similar to previous days. Minimums will remain around 11 degrees Celsius, with an apparent temperature of approximately 8 degrees Celsius due to the cooler winds.
The State Meteorological Agency advises the public to consult daily updates as the specific dates approach. Precise planning for activities during the holiday period will benefit from the latest information, ensuring residents and visitors can adapt their plans accordingly.
