Barcelona’s educational equity has shown significant progress according to the 2024 Educational Opportunities Report. The study reveals vulnerable students improved academic results by six percentage points. Meanwhile, school segregation rates dropped substantially across all education levels.

Academic Improvements Across Barcelona
The report highlights remarkable academic gains for disadvantaged students. These improvements coincide with Barcelona’s 2019 School Segregation Emergency Plan. Additionally, the 2021 Admissions Decree contributed to these positive changes.
Furthermore, Barcelona students outperformed Catalan averages in standardised tests. Primary education results proved particularly strong. Consequently, the city demonstrates educational resilience despite broader regional challenges.
The Barcelona Education Consortium implemented key policies driving these changes. Moreover, the Metròpoli Institute conducted the comprehensive research study.
Expanding Educational Access Citywide
Early childhood education access increased dramatically across Barcelona. Municipal nursery school places grew significantly over the past decade. Therefore, theoretical coverage rates jumped from 18.5% to 26.3%.
However, demand still exceeds available nursery places. Approximately 65-66% of applications received placement this academic year. Nevertheless, the expansion represents important progress for young families.
Meanwhile, vocational training enrolment increased substantially. Consequently, early school leaving rates dropped to just 7.7% in Barcelona. This compares favourably with Catalonia’s 14.8% average rate.
Beyond School Hours Support
Educational support extended well beyond traditional classroom hours. The city distributed thousands of extracurricular activity grants. Specifically, 22,278 summer holiday programme scholarships helped families.
Additionally, 17,534 sports activity grants supported young participants. Another 1,887 educational afternoon programme placements filled critical needs. These initiatives helped recovery from pandemic-related participation declines.
Moreover, school repetition rates decreased across Barcelona. Meanwhile, compulsory secondary education graduation rates improved. These combined factors demonstrate comprehensive educational advancement.
Barcelona’s educational equity journey shows tangible results across multiple indicators. The city’s targeted policies produced measurable improvements for vulnerable students. Future initiatives will build upon this solid foundation of progress.
