Record-Breaking Passenger Growth Continues
September became the fifth straight month exceeding five million passengers. Moreover, the airport has handled 43.6 million passengers so far this year. This shows a 4.1% growth compared to the same period last year. The current growth rate suggests El Prat will easily surpass 57 million annual passengers.
International travel continues to drive this expansion. Meanwhile, domestic flights have seen a slight decrease. Specifically, international passengers reached 4.02 million in September. This represents a 6.3% increase. However, domestic travellers fell by 1.7% to 1.25 million. This trend has persisted for several months according to Aena’s official statistics.
Capacity Challenges and Future Solutions
Aena has repeatedly warned about El Prat’s capacity limitations. The airport manager states urgent expansion is needed. This is particularly true for intercontinental flights. Furthermore, the airport has reached its theoretical limit of 55 million passengers annually.
The proposed solutions include expanding Terminal 1. Additionally, plans involve building a satellite terminal and extending the third runway. Meanwhile, Aena is promoting off-season tourism. They are also optimising flight slots during quieter hours. These measures aim to accommodate more flights, especially overnight and early morning operations.
The airport managed 273,451 flights this year. This represents a 3.8% increase from 2024. The strategy has successfully boosted passenger numbers during quieter months. However, summer tourist arrivals continue to strain facilities. The situation requires immediate infrastructure improvements.
