The Government of Catalonia’s Department of Social Rights and Inclusion has begun substantial improvement works. These upgrades target four elderly care residences and day centres across Barcelona. The projects represent a multi-million euro investment from European funds. Three of these works commenced in mid-March. They are located in the districts of Ciutat Vella, Sant Martí, and Les Corts. The fourth project will start in Sant Andreu during the second half of April.

Major Investment in Barcelona Care

These upgrades form part of a larger €5 million investment. The European Union’s Next Generation EU funds provide this financing. This funding targets seven government-owned residences and day centres within Barcelona. The department has already completed three of these seven projects. The current works focus on modernising facilities. They also aim to improve the quality of life for residents.

Focus on Person-Centred Care

The improvements include significant upgrades to bathrooms. They also involve adaptation to a new person-centred care model. Specific centres benefit from these upgrades. Bertran i Oriola in Ciutat Vella receives €466,548.24. La Verneda in Sant Martí sees an investment of €674,118.35. The Les Corts centre also receives an €867,032.16 allocation for similar enhancements. Meanwhile, the A.C. Sandino residence and day centre in Sant Andreu will receive €1,495,391.87. This funding is for climate control and air renewal system improvements.

Expanding Public Care Capacity

This initiative additionally complements the planned construction of the new Benavent residence. This facility will be located in the Les Corts district. The Department of Social Rights and Inclusion will realise this project. It involves an investment of nearly €15 million, also from European funds. The new facility will add 80 residential places. It will also provide 30 day care places to the city’s public care provision. These investments aim to modernise Barcelona’s public elderly care facilities. They will enhance the quality of life for residents and expand capacity for future needs.
