Barcelona employment has demonstrated remarkable resilience with significant workforce growth across key metropolitan areas according to the latest official data.
The Llobregat Business Forum’s third-quarter 2025 report reveals particularly strong performance in L’Hospitalet and Baix Llobregat regions.
Barcelona Employment Trends Show Sustained Recovery
Recent statistics indicate substantial progress in workforce participation rates across the Barcelona metropolitan area. The employment rate has climbed from 39.3% at the end of 2020 to over 41.3% currently. Furthermore, the territory now records 486,832 employed individuals, representing a 1.99% increase from the previous quarter.
This quarterly growth follows a temporary decline in the second quarter, demonstrating the market’s recovery capacity. Additionally, the year-on-year comparison shows even more impressive development with a 4.11% increase since September 2024.
Several municipalities have emerged as employment growth leaders during this period. La Palma de Cervelló leads with a remarkable 9.2% increase, while L’Hospitalet follows closely with 8.8% growth. Similarly, Sant Just Desvern and Viladecans recorded substantial increases of 5.7% and 5.6% respectively.
Contract Formalisation and Unemployment Dynamics
The employment surge coincides with increased contract formalisation across the region. During the third quarter of 2025, businesses registered 79,488 employment contracts, representing a 5% increase compared to the same period last year. Consequently, this marks a 6.3% improvement from the second quarter’s figures.
However, unemployment figures present a more complex picture. The number of unemployed individuals reached 44,010 by the end of the third quarter, reflecting an increase of 869 people from the previous quarter. Nevertheless, the annual comparison shows improvement, with unemployment decreasing from 44,908 individuals in the third quarter of 2024.
The Forum’s report highlights methodological considerations in the data collection process. Specifically, it notes that fixed-discontinuous inactive workers continue appearing as employed in statistics, even when receiving unemployment benefits. This accounting practice potentially affects the accuracy of employment figures.
Despite these methodological considerations, the overall employment trajectory remains positive. The Barcelona metropolitan area continues demonstrating economic resilience through sustained employment growth and increased business activity.
