Welcome to the January Barcelona English Speakers update.

January is another quiet month in the community historically – a combination of the Christmas lag and miserable weather (by Barcelona standards) tends to mean not a lot is going on. In the community I am pleased/apprehensive to say that the community is growing nicely – but we are also about to hit our community limit again. Historically we have taken a busy/full group, closed it to new members and moved to a new one (and its members), cutting the old one from the community. We try to give ample time for the existing members to be able to migrate over and then we close the old community.

This is not an ideal solution, but its all we have (for now) – I am working on a solution to monitor activity in the groups (activity = messages and reactions to posts) and hopefully I can find a fair solution. We do appreciate that not all people feel like they want to get involved in the conversation – and I also respect that it can seem at times a little intimidating to message in a new bunch. We try hard to make everyone feel welcome and free to post in a supportive manner – so don’t be a stranger, please do get involved, even a reaction to a useful/funny/stupid comment adds to the vibe of the groups.

It might be in the future that we need to look at the activity of members when deciding how we manage group capacity due to WhatsApp limitations, so the best thing you can do is to get involved in whatever way you find most comfortable.

The meet-ups have been quiet over the Christmas period, but the Book Club had their first meeting of the year having read Rebecca. In Screen Time we had a private screening of “Frances Ha” on the 12th January and I hope more activities like this will be arranged in the future. We have a casual football game being organised on the 24th January in Play Sports looking for 1 or 2 players at the time of writing. Volleyball and hikes have been paused, but check the meetup group or the Hiking & Nature groups for updates.

We have also announced our Monthly Meet-Up at our old haunt D9 Aribau, which is on Friday 30th January, starting at 8pm with a free drink for anyone that attends before 8:30 – everyone is welcome, but capacity is limited to please register here asap if you want to attend. I hope to meet you there!

Finally, Bizcelona is going really well, we have a meet-up next week and it’s exciting to bring together likeminded individuals who want to network and share ideas and contacts to help grow their business. We are open for applications from business owners, freelancers and/or senior professionals.

Thanks everyone who reads, if you have any feedback on the community and how we can do things better, please let myself or any of the admins know.

Cheers, Owen
