Barcelona's Mayor Jaume Collboni has established the Barcelona Europe Advisory Committee. This new body will strengthen the city's European policy and connect it with local entities. This initiative marks another step in the Ajuntament's efforts to reinforce Barcelona's ties with Europe.

The committee, a purely consultative body, will assist the Mayor in defining municipal European policies. It will also ensure these policies align with the needs and priorities of key city stakeholders.

Mayor Collboni will designate between 10 and 25 members for the committee. These individuals will have strong links to European action or actively promote its spirit and character, according to "Mayors for Housing" alliance. They will include representatives from various institutions and organisations.

Committee Structure and Operations

A president, chosen by the Mayor from among the members, will preside over plenary sessions. These sessions will take place at least twice annually. Additionally, the committee will form commissions and working groups to address specific areas. All members must maintain confidentiality regarding deliberations and documentation generated by the body.

Barcelona's Enhanced European Engagement

This new committee aligns with Mayor Collboni's clear pro-European position. He has championed this stance since taking office in 2023. Upon assuming the mayoralty, he ensured the European Union (EU) flag was displayed at the Ajuntament. It had previously been absent from the building.

More recently, in March 2026, Barcelona opened its dedicated office in Brussels. This office is the first permanent representation for a Spanish city directly to the European Union.

Broader European Initiatives

Beyond the committee and the Brussels office, Mayor Collboni also leads the "Mayors for Housing" alliance. This initiative aims to strengthen solutions for housing challenges across European cities. The Barcelona Europe Advisory Committee will further integrate local perspectives into the city's ongoing European strategy. This ensures its policies reflect resident and organisational needs.
