The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) launched a new free exhibition, "Naturalment metropolitans" (Naturally Metropolitan), this week. It is located at Espai Mercè Sala, within the bustling Diagonal Metro station, and runs until 22 July. The exhibition explores the significant transformation of the metropolitan landscape over recent decades, showing how urban planning has reshaped the region.

This display forms part of the World Capital of Architecture 2026 programme, a major initiative for the city. It also coincides with the AMB's fifteenth anniversary, marking a milestone in its work. The exhibition panels show how former agricultural and industrial areas have become valuable environmental spaces for public enjoyment. This shift directly impacts the daily lives of millions of residents across the metropolitan area.

Metropolitan Parks: Key to Sustainability

Metropolitan parks play a critical role in current environmental challenges facing Barcelona and its surrounding areas. These include essential water management, efforts to mitigate climate change, and boosting urban biodiversity. The AMB uses this exhibition to highlight its extensive network of green spaces, which are often overlooked.

The AMB currently manages 55 parks spread across 35 municipalities. These parks serve as vital public spaces, structured around three main principles for residents. Firstly, they offer significant environmental value, acting as urban lungs. Secondly, they preserve architectural heritage found within these green zones. Thirdly, they foster social cohesion and citizen participation, providing community gathering points.

Green Infrastructure for Barcelona's Future

The Barcelona Metropolitan Area champions green spaces as key elements shaping the territory. These areas also work to improve residents' quality of life by offering places for recreation and relaxation. The exhibition aims to show how these transformations benefit everyone living in and visiting the region, from families to tourists.

Visitors can experience this transformation firsthand at the Diagonal Metro station until 22 July. The exhibition underscores the ongoing importance of urban green infrastructure for Barcelona's sustainable future. It highlights the AMB's commitment to creating a greener, more liveable metropolitan environment.
