According to a new economic report from the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Provincial Council, artificial intelligence implementation is rapidly replacing routine administrative tasks while simultaneously creating new opportunities in the technology sector.
AI Job Transformation Creates Dual Employment Impact
The comprehensive study reveals a clear pattern emerging across Barcelona’s business environment.
Companies are increasingly assigning repetitive, automatable tasks to virtual assistants rather than human employees.Consequently, this shift has contributed significantly to the decline in traditional office roles. Meanwhile, the technology sector has added nearly 10,000 new positions in Barcelona province during the same period, creating a net positive employment effect overall.
Carmen Poveda, economic analysis director at the Chamber, highlighted the generational implications of this transformation. “We’re beginning to see a clear trend,” she explained. “The ChatGPT phenomenon particularly affects younger workers, making it more difficult for those under 30 to enter the labour market for the first time.” Furthermore, she noted that senior roles with higher added value remain more protected from AI replacement.
Barcelona’s broader economic outlook remains positive despite these structural changes. The province continues to demonstrate strong growth compared to neighbouring countries, with unemployment reaching a 15-year low of 7.4%. Lluïsa Moret, president of the Provincial Council, emphasised the strategic commitment to technology development while acknowledging the need to address persistent gender gaps in participation, rank, and salary within the sector.
Tech Sector Expansion Offsets Office Job Losses
Barcelona’s technology ecosystem continues to strengthen its international position. Currently, 17.4% of Spain’s entire ICT workforce resides in Barcelona, with the city and surrounding areas concentrating over 90% of Catalonia’s technology professionals. This concentration continues to increase, according to the Chamber and Council representatives.
The technology sector now employs 130,485 people based on 2024 data, nearly double the figure from 2012 when the economy began emerging from the Great Recession. Its share of total employment has increased from 3.2% to 4.7% during this period. This growth demonstrates how Barcelona is leveraging its technological hubs and universities to become a significant activity pole, as recent initiatives have highlighted.
Employment growth in Barcelona now follows two distinct patterns. The capital and other provincial cities are gaining both technology professionals working from cafes and service workers serving their coffee or delivering their meals. Notably, nearly half of new social security registrations in Barcelona during the past year involve foreign-born workers, with a quarter of the province’s employed population born outside Spain.
This AI job transformation represents a fundamental restructuring of Barcelona’s employment landscape. While traditional office roles decline, the city continues to position itself as a leading international technology investment destination. The private sector has taken over from public administration as the main employment generator, with services particularly contributing to this shift according to the official report findings.
