The Barcelona Half Marathon 2027 will see an unprecedented 40,000 participants, setting a new record for the event. This figure surpasses the 36,000 bibs sold for the 2026 edition, solidifying its position as Spain's most popular half marathon and the second largest in Europe, according to betevé.

Record Participation and Quick Registration

Organisers opened registrations for the 37th Hyundai Mitja Marató de Barcelona by Brooks on 14 May, offering 40,000 spots. An impressive 30,000 of these places sold out within just 24 hours. The race covers a distance of 21.097 kilometres, attracting both seasoned runners and new participants to the city's streets.

The event starts at 08:30 from Passeig de Picasso, near Parc de la Ciutadella. Runners have 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete the course, with the finish line closing around 13:05. Multiple staggered starts help manage the large number of participants.

The Barcelona Half Marathon route remains consistent with previous editions, prioritising speed over passing through every iconic landmark. However, runners still experience many well-known areas of Barcelona. The course is largely flat and runs close to the city's coastline, offering a fast track for personal bests.

From the start at Passeig de Picasso, the route descends to the Monument a Colom. It then ascends Paral·lel, continues along Ronda de Sant Pau and Sepúlveda, reaching Gran Via before turning back towards the city centre. After passing through Poblenou, the course heads to Rambla de Prim, then descends to the Fòrum, completing a significant portion along the Barcelona coastline. The finish line is located on Passeig de Pujades at Carrer de Nàpols, conveniently close to the starting point.

City-Wide Impact and Transport Advice

The race affects approximately 30 streets and adjacent roads, which will be closed between 08:30 and 13:15. This impacts around 20 bus lines and tram lines T4, T5, and T6, which will operate with altered services. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) recommends using the metro for travel during the event, as it remains unaffected by the road closures.

Beyond the competition, the Barcelona Half Marathon is a significant citizen's festival. Approximately 500 entertainers are strategically placed at every kilometre mark along the race route. These animation points feature a variety of performers, including batucada groups, drummers, dance schools, acrobatics teams, and gospel choirs. Areas like Gran Via and Carrer de la Marina typically host the most lively animation groups, creating a vibrant atmosphere for runners and spectators alike.

A History of Elite Performance

The Barcelona Half Marathon has a rich history of attracting elite athletes and witnessing record-breaking performances. The 2026 edition saw Kenya's Loice Chemnung set a new women's course record with a time of 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 1 second. Ethiopia's Hagos Gebrhiwet won the men's race in 58 minutes and 5 seconds.

Past participants include world champions like Abel Kirui in 2012. Marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge competed and won in both 2013 and 2014, setting a course record in 2013. The men's record has seen continuous improvement, with Charles Langat of Kenya lowering it to 58 minutes and 53 seconds in 2023. Kenya's Florence Kiplagat dominated the women's category for four years, even setting two world records for the half marathon in Barcelona. Joyciline Jepkosgei further improved the women's course record in 2024 and again in 2026.

Essential Tips for Runners

Experts provide several nutrition tips for participants to ensure a successful race. They advise runners to test their planned race-day breakfast before a long training run to observe their body's reaction. Additionally, consuming more carbohydrate-rich foods, such as rice and pasta, in the days leading up to the race is recommended. Staying hydrated throughout the race and taking carbohydrate gels every 45-50 minutes are also critical for maintaining energy levels.

The Barcelona Half Marathon 2027 continues to grow in stature and popularity. Its record participation highlights its importance on the international running calendar and its role as a major sporting event for Barcelona residents and visitors.
