The Barcelona Half Marathon is bracing for an unprecedented sporting spectacle. This Sunday, February 13, the Hyundai Media Marató Barcelona by Brooks will see a historic 36,000 runners take to the streets. This figure shatters last year’s attendance of 31,000. Consequently, it places the Barcelona event firmly on the European podium, trailing only Berlin in terms of mass participation.
However, the lead-up to the race has been dominated less by training times and more by administrative friction. During the official presentation at Montjuïc Castle, the atmosphere was charged not with celebration, but with institutional conflict.

Record Controversy Overshadows the Barcelona Half Marathon Start Line
Barcelona’s Sports Councilor, David Escudé, used the platform to launch a scathing critique of World Athletics. At the heart of the dispute is the international body’s refusal to ratify a stunning time of 56:40. Ugandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo achieved this time in the previous edition of the race.
According to the federation, the record cannot stand because the athlete allegedly benefited from the slipstream of an organisation vehicle. This decision has sparked fury within the City Council.
“It is incomprehensible,” stated Escudé. He suggested that “third-party interests” might be at play to prevent Barcelona from officially holding the world record. The Council has confirmed it intends to appeal the decision as soon as formal notification is received.
“From the Barcelona City Council, we are going to go all the way. We don’t understand absolutely anything: neither the delay, nor the result, nor the lack of information.”David Escudé, Sports Councilor
Elite Field: Chasing Fast Times at the Barcelona Half Marathon
Despite the bureaucratic storm, the race on the asphalt promises to be world-class. Organisers acknowledge that breaking circuit records will be difficult due to the exceptionally high existing benchmarks. Nevertheless, the elite field is formidable.
Ethiopian legend Hagos Gebrhiwet makes his debut in Barcelona as the favourite. He has previously run the distance in under 58 minutes. Meanwhile, the race will host an assault on the European record by Switzerland’s Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu. He is targeting the 59:13 mark set by Julien Wanders in 2019.
In the women’s category, Kenya’s Loice Chemmung leads the pack. Local eyes will be on Catalan runner Marta Galimany. Galimany is aiming to smash her personal best and break the one-hour-ten-minute barrier on home soil.
A Global and Inclusive Phenomenon at the Barcelona Half Marathon
Beyond the elite times, the statistics for the mass participation race are perhaps the organisation’s proudest achievement. Female participation has consolidated at a historic 40%. This is a significant milestone for parity in the sport.
Furthermore, the event’s international appeal continues to grow. 40% of runners are travelling from abroad, representing 95 different countries. This influx confirms the Barcelona Half Marathon’s status not just as a sporting fixture, but as a major driver of tourism.
The course remains fast and flat. It features just 25 turns as it guides athletes from the Passeig d’Isabel II to Avinguda Marina. Therefore, it promises to be a festival of popular athletics. However, the shadow of the record dispute lingers over the finish line.
