Barcelona health hub growth has positioned the city as a global life sciences leader, according to a major new report.

The Barcelona Chamber of Commerce study reveals 23 new digital and excellence hubs have been established in the metropolitan area since 2020, creating 5,000 new jobs.

Consequently, Barcelona is now the only Spanish city ranked in the EMEA region for global health investment capture.

Barcelona Health Hub Rises in Global Rankings

The report, ‘The Barcelona Metropolis. Invest, Work and Live 2025’, places the city 12th among European capitals for health investment. This puts it on a similar level to Zurich, Munich, and Dublin, though still behind leaders like London and Paris. Furthermore, Barcelona climbs to 9th position specifically for health technology companies, highlighting its specialisation in this high-growth sector.

This economic dynamism is translating into scientific leadership. The Barcelona metropolitan area is now the 9th European zone for scientific production and 50th globally. In 2023 alone, over 1,500 scientific articles were published from the region, representing 25% of Spain’s total output. The sector also attracted more than 25,500 graduates in scientific branches that year.

During the presentation, the president of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Josep Santacreu, argued that maintaining this level requires a stronger collective vision. “Our future involves presenting ourselves to the world as a metropolis larger than just the city of Barcelona,” he stated. Jordi Valls, Vice President of Social and Economic Development for the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), emphasised the importance of public-private collaboration, noting the sector’s success brings “direct benefits” for citizens by strengthening the public health system and improving salary structures.

The broader economic picture remains robust. The metropolitan area is home to 111,641 companies, accounting for 45% of Catalonia’s business network. More than half of Catalonia’s GDP is concentrated here, with a per capita GDP nearing €45,000 in 2023. This figure exceeds the Catalan average and approaches the European Union average. Additionally, the region’s record-breaking airport passenger numbers facilitate crucial business connections.

Business tourism is a key driver, accounting for one in five visitors. Barcelona ranks as the world’s fourth city for the number of meetings and second for participants per event. Major trade fairs like Alimentaria, Hostelco, and the Mobile World Congress, which regularly attract over 100,000 participants, are central to this success. The city’s ability to host such events, even amidst international diplomatic tensions, underscores its resilient appeal.
