Heavy rain alert warnings have been issued for Barcelona and its metropolitan area, with Civil Protection activating the Inuncat emergency plan.

According to the Catalan Meteorological Service (Meteocat), the main downpours are expected from Friday evening onwards. The most intense period will likely occur around 10pm and continue through Saturday morning. Consequently, accumulated rainfall could reach 6.6mm in less than an hour during peak periods.
Rainfall will persist through Saturday morning and midday, meaning the city faces a thoroughly wet day. The situation should stabilise by Saturday afternoon, although heavy cloud cover will remain. However, the umbrella won’t be going away for the entire weekend, as further showers are forecast for Sunday afternoon and evening, albeit with less intensity.
The precipitation will also affect temperatures, which will drop to around 14 degrees Celsius after recent warmer weeks. Minimum temperatures could fall to 11 degrees. This weather shift comes at a particularly inconvenient time, coinciding with numerous planned outdoor Christmas activities.
Authorities Urge Public Caution During Festive Period
Civil Protection has issued strong warnings for public vigilance, especially during Friday afternoon and Saturday. Imma Solé, the operational deputy director, emphasised the need for “maximum prevention and vigilance” given the Christmas context. She provided a clear example: “If we see rain starting and there’s a Christmas train operating in a municipality, we should stop it – now is not the time for it to be running.”
Civil Protection has already sent recommendations to local councils regarding the meteorological forecast. Furthermore, they haven’t ruled out sending ES-Alert emergency messages to the population if necessary. This would occur if storms affect a “wide area” in a “prolonged” manner, posing significant risk.
The activation of the Inuncat plan highlights official concern about potential flash flooding in urban areas. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall, clear drains near their properties, and stay informed through official channels. This severe weather follows other recent emergency responses in the region, underscoring the importance of preparedness.
