Barcelona is set to become a focal point for the Catholic Church in June 2026, hosting a major international meeting of Mediterranean bishops dedicated to peace, which will coincide with the highly anticipated visit of Pope Leo XIV. The annual conference, known as MED26, will take place in the Catalan capital from June 9 to 12, as confirmed by the Holy See’s official news portal, Vatican News.

The timing of the summit is deeply significant, aligning with a papal visit that marks a historic moment for the city: the centenary of the death of architect Antoni Gaudí. The Pope’s presence is primarily to commemorate the occasion and to inaugurate the final central tower of Gaudí’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Família. The convergence of these two major events underscores Barcelona’s role as a cultural and spiritual crossroads in the Mediterranean.
A Focus on Peace and Dialogue
The central theme of the MED26 meeting will be the construction of peace across the Mediterranean basin, a region often marked by political tension and conflict. The Ecclesial Coordination Office for the Mediterranean (COMED), an organisation led by the French Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, is managing preparations. According to a report in El Periódico, a delegation from COMED met with Pope Leo XIV in a private audience last Thursday to discuss the forthcoming event.
The delegation included a diverse group of church leaders, such as the archbishops of Bari, Tunis, and Marseille, and the patriarchal vicar of Cyprus. Notably, Bishop Xabier Gómez of the nearby Diocese of Sant Feliu de Llobregat was also in attendance, highlighting the local church’s integral role in the organisation. The meeting, which lasted an hour, also included young people, priests, and lay members involved in the planning.
Father Alexis Leproux, secretary of the Coordination Office, said the Pope showed a particular interest in initiatives promoting peace education and a “culture of encounter.” He reported that the Pontiff encouraged the group to “continue the work of communion” in a period marked by “tragic events and disturbing wars that are multiplying.”
An International Gathering in Barcelona
The Archbishop of Barcelona, Cardinal Juan José Omella, has invited approximately 200 people to participate in the four-day summit. The guest list reflects the meeting’s emphasis on broad-based dialogue, comprising 60 bishops, 70 young people from various religious backgrounds, and 60 individuals working in solidarity and interfaith dialogue.
The summit will add another layer of significance to a papal visit that is already capturing the city’s attention. As previously reported by Barna.News, the Catalan government has formed special committees to manage the complex logistics of the visit. The Pope is expected to preside over at least two public masses and is also considering a visit to the iconic Montserrat Monastery.
The MED26 conference will not only address contemporary geopolitical issues but will also pay homage to the city’s most famous landmark. It will commemorate the Sagrada Família and the legacy of Gaudí, whose centenary of death on June 10 falls squarely in the middle of the bishops’ meeting. The Pope’s visit is timed precisely for this commemoration and the expected completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ, which will make the basilica the tallest church in the world.
