Barcelona immigration policies have become the focus of a new political campaign launched by the city’s municipal PP group.

Daniel Sirera, leader of the Popular Party in Barcelona, presented the ‘Ordered Immigration’ initiative on Wednesday in Raval’s Rambla, promising to extend the campaign across all city neighbourhoods.

The campaign will establish meeting points where residents can learn about the party’s immigration proposals.

Furthermore, Sirera has suggested the Barcelona City Council should include civic attitude as a criterion in residency permit applications. This proposal was previously rejected in last Friday’s municipal plenary, receiving support only from Vox.

Barcelona Immigration Policy Proposals

Among the measures outlined, the PP leader called for enhanced collaboration between the Guardia Urbana and other police forces to identify what he described as ‘mafias’ and individuals with irregular status. Consequently, he proposed that local police should be able to transfer such cases to the Mossos d’Esquadra or National Police for potential repatriation.

Additionally, Sirera suggested banning burkas and niqabs in public spaces, following Portugal’s example. He argued this would ‘guarantee security and human dignity for women’. The Raval district was chosen for the campaign launch due to its significant foreign population presence, second only to the Gothic Quarter in Spain.

Meanwhile, recent police operations in public spaces have highlighted ongoing security discussions in the city. Sirera emphasised that many residents no longer recognise their surroundings due to what he termed ‘disordered immigration’.

However, the PP leader insisted the campaign isn’t anti-immigration but rather promotes ‘ordered, humane and effective’ migration policies. To illustrate this point, he noted that three members of his municipal group are of foreign origin. The campaign’s development will be closely watched as Barcelona continues evolving as a multicultural hub.
