Barcelona has opened the doors to the newly refurbished gardens of Sant Joan de Déu, bringing fresh life to one of Les Corts’ green spaces after eighteen months of construction. The project has been presented as part of the city’s push to create more inclusive, welcoming and environmentally resilient public areas.

The redesign has enhanced existing facilities with new playgrounds, inclusive recreational equipment and meeting spaces. Families can now enjoy picnic areas, a multipurpose tiered seating zone and more accessible pathways. Meanwhile, the green heart of the park has been reinforced by retaining as many healthy trees as possible and planting clusters of shrubs to enrich the landscape.
The works were made possible through a public-private partnership between the Les Corts district and Illa Diagonal, which contributed 3.8 million euros towards the project. The City Council added a further 183,185 euros, covering project management and safety oversight. Municipal operator BIMSA executed the work.
The refurbishment also coincides with the wider Illa Diagonal development, including the construction of a new Umbracle. Together, these projects are intended to make the space more adaptable, healthier and accessible for all generations.
The reopening has been welcomed locally as a step towards reclaiming urban spaces for social life and leisure, though some residents are keen to see how well the gardens withstand daily use in the long term.
