At an event in the historic Saló de Cent, reserved for the city’s most significant occasions, Barcelona’s mayor Jaume Collboni formally presented the creation of the city’s new “District 11”. This symbolic district will be dedicated to supporting the reconstruction of Palestinian cities destroyed by the Israeli army.

The initiative echoes Barcelona’s efforts in the 1990s, when the city provided assistance to Sarajevo during the war in the Balkans. Now, the Catalan capital is once again stepping forward, committing both financial resources and technical expertise to help alleviate the devastation inflicted on civilian populations.
An initial allocation of one million euros was announced in August, but this has now been increased to 1.5 million euros. The programme will be overseen by deputy mayor Maria Eugènia Gay, who will take on the role of councillor for the newly created District 11.
Barcelona’s decision highlights its tradition of international solidarity and its willingness to contribute meaningfully to global humanitarian challenges, particularly those arising from conflict and destruction.
