Barcelona nightlife venues have been issued with 33 infractions following a major safety crackdown by the city’s Urban Guard.
The operation, which began on 2 December, forms part of the council’s special ‘Christmas Operation’ to ensure safety during the festive season and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Barcelona Nightlife Venues Under Scrutiny
Officers have inspected 66 venues across all ten city districts since the campaign began. Consequently, they have identified numerous violations related to administrative and safety regulations. The primary goal is to verify that establishments comply with all rules both before and during celebrations. Therefore, authorities aim to ensure festivities proceed without incident while respecting neighbourhood coexistence.
When venues are open, the Urban Guard supervises several key areas. They check that maximum authorised capacities are respected and that closing times are strictly adhered to. Furthermore, they monitor for uncivil behaviour and prevent alcohol consumption in public streets. The presence of security personnel and access control staff is also verified according to each establishment’s capacity. This helps prevent overcrowding and ensures any risk situations can be addressed promptly.
Additionally, officers review compliance with other critical safety conditions. These include emergency exits, evacuation routes, signage, and fire protection systems. Electrical installations must be correctly installed and maintained, while hygiene and sanitation conditions—including ventilation and lighting—are also assessed. Compliance with soundproofing regulations to avoid disturbing residents completes the checklist.
This heightened surveillance comes as the city prepares for increased festive activity. The council’s broader strategy includes coordinating with the Mossos d’Esquadra to prevent crime and monitor commercial areas. Meanwhile, mobility and road safety controls are being intensified across Barcelona. This includes monitoring illegal parking and conducting alcohol and drug checks on drivers at strategic city points.
