Barcelona Bus Zone 4.0 launches in January 2026, requiring all tourist coaches to reserve parking spaces online.

The Barcelona City Council has begun deploying the new system to improve traffic flow and minimise the negative impact of these large vehicles.

From this Thursday, coach drivers can apply for permits and book parking through the zonabus.cat website.

Consequently, the council aims to foster a more orderly, efficient, and sustainable mobility model for the city.

How the New Barcelona Bus Zone 4.0 System Works

Drivers must make an online reservation to park or make brief stops for passenger pick-up and drop-off. The system has two key components. Firstly, a daily permit costing €35 must be obtained before the day of the visit. Secondly, a prior reservation costing €3 is required in high-occupancy areas via the SPRO app.

The mandatory reservation zones cover major tourist attractions. These include the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, La Pedrera, and the MNAC museum. Furthermore, the model introduces a limit on the number of operations per hour at the most sensitive stops.

Before using a Bus Zone space, drivers must create an account online and request the daily permit. They must also book their specific space and time slot if required. The system currently comprises 210 bookable spaces, with 51 for brief stops and 159 for parking.

Additionally, there are 40 intermodal spaces in areas away from the city centre where no prior booking is needed. Locations like Camp Nou and Diagonal Mar fall into this category. After managing the permit and reservation, drivers must log their arrival and departure times in the SPRO app for each space.

The cost of each operation is charged automatically via the registered payment method. This procedure allows for real-time occupancy information. The council asserts the new Barcelona Bus Zone 4.0 model will more evenly redistribute coach flows.

This should reduce the impact on everyday mobility in high-traffic areas. In 2023, 70,000 tourist coaches entered the Catalan capital, performing 156,000 operations. The new system aims to bring order to this significant volume of traffic, especially around key sites like the Sagrada Família metro station. The launch of Barcelona Bus Zone 4.0 represents a major step in managing the city’s tourist mobility.
