Consequently, specific, opaque and sealed containers have been installed at all green points to ensure secure, controlled circuits with full device traceability.
Barcelona Launches Mobile Phone and Cava Bottle Recycling for Circular Economy
Previously, mobile phones were collected alongside other electronic waste. The new method, however, allows for more efficient recycling management. The collection operates with support from the Ecoasimelec Foundation through the social enterprise Andròmines.
This organisation retrieves the containers and transports devices to a preparation centre. There, their condition is evaluated to determine if they can be reused. Furthermore, technical staff securely erase all data the phones may contain and validate their functionality.
Devices unsuitable for reuse are sent for recycling to recover the maximum materials. This initiative aims to strengthen the city’s circular economy, a key focus of the current administration’s environmental strategy. The council’s broader efforts to manage resources and waste are also reflected in its record budget preparations for 2026.
Regarding cava bottles, their differentiated collection from other waste resumes at city green points on 15 December. This timing coincides with the Christmas holidays, when consumption typically increases. The goal is to facilitate public return of these bottles for recovery and reuse by the wine sector.
According to the official announcement, the services are now operational. The council hopes these targeted collections will improve recycling rates for specific, high-volume items. This approach addresses two distinct waste streams with dedicated solutions.
Barcelona launches mobile phone and cava bottle recycling as a practical step towards its sustainability targets. The city continues to expand its environmental services, encouraging resident participation in building a more circular local economy.
