Barcelona is set to host the annual Zurich Marathon this Sunday, March 15, an event that will see a record number of runners take to the streets and trigger significant road closures and widespread public transport disruptions across the city.

With over 32,000 participants registered, residents and visitors must plan their journeys well in advance. Authorities will cordon off major thoroughfares from the early hours of the morning to accommodate the 42.1-kilometre race.

A Record-Breaking Race

This year’s marathon stands as one of the city’s most symbolic sporting events and its most inclusive to date, with women comprising 26% of the record-breaking field. The race, boasting a cumulative elevation gain of 178 metres, attracts thousands of international runners, cementing its status as a major fixture on both the sporting and tourism calendars for Barcelona. Its scale compares to other major city races, such as the recent Barcelona Half Marathon, which also saw a record turnout.

Traffic and Parking Restrictions

The Barcelona City Council has outlined a detailed traffic management plan. Closures begin at 5:00 AM on Sunday, affecting central areas around Plaça de Catalunya, Ronda de la Universitat, Plaça Urquinaona, and Ronda de Sant Pere.

From 7:30 AM, the entire race route will close to all traffic. The starting pistol fires at 8:30 AM on the iconic Passeig de Gràcia, between Gran Via and Plaça de Catalunya. This major artery, a central feature of the Gràcia district’s transformation, will reopen in phases. ABC Cataluña reports that the boulevard’s side nearest the Besòs River will reopen to traffic once all runners pass the starting section. Runners will finish at Passeig de Lluís Companys. Beyond these closures, parking is strictly prohibited along numerous streets on the route, and drivers must check for temporary signage.

Widespread Changes to Bus and Tram Services

Public transport faces heavy impacts throughout Sunday morning and into the afternoon. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will divert a total of 47 bus lines or operate them on a limited schedule. Key routes impacted include D20, D50, H12, H16, and V15, among many others. Additionally, the popular red and blue routes of the hop-on-hop-off tourist bus will operate with reduced service.

The city’s tram network will also experience service alterations. Trambesòs lines T4, T5, and T6 will all face disruptions during the morning. The official TRAM website indicates a partial service restoration as follows:

  • 12:00 PM: Line T4 will partially reopen between Glòries and Verdaguer.
  • 2:45 PM: Full service on line T4 is expected to be restored.
  • 3:30 PM: Lines T5 and T6 are scheduled to return to normal operation.

To avoid disruption, Barcelona City Council strongly recommends that residents and visitors use the Metro for travel between 6:30 AM and 3:00 PM in race-affected areas. The underground system will operate as normal and remains the most reliable way to navigate the city on Sunday.
