Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni recently highlighted the city's extensive religious diversity during the annual Interconfessional Harmony Week. He stated that Barcelona hosts over 1,000 religious communities and entities, alongside more than 500 places of worship and nearly 40 spiritual traditions.
Promoting Freedom of Belief
The Mayor called for the protection and promotion of religious freedom. "We must defend and promote that all beliefs and confessions can and want to continue expressing themselves in freedom," Mayor Collboni stated in a City Council announcement. This commitment reflects Barcelona's long-standing dedication to social cohesion and mutual respect among its residents.
Distinguished Guests Attend Ceremony
President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and Conseller for Justice and Democratic Quality, Ramon Espadaler, also attended the event at the Barcelona City Council on April 27. Deputy Mayors Albert Batlle and Maria Eugènia Gay were present, as was Antoni Matabosch, President of the Stable Working Group of Religions. Their attendance underscored the importance of interfaith dialogue for both city and regional governments.
Mayor Collboni additionally mentioned the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV in June. He described the Pope as "a spiritual voice that is calling for peace." Barcelona, a city committed to peace, joins this global call. The event, presented by journalist Judit Casellas, included a dialogue panel.
Focus on Nature and Spirituality
Islamologist and philologist Halil Bárcena, Maria Bargalló from the Archdiocese of Barcelona and Justícia i Pau, and Professor Jonatan Soriano from the Faculty of Teology at the Biblical Institute and Theological Seminary of Spain participated in the discussion. This year's World Interconfessional Harmony Week focused on the connection between nature and spirituality. It aimed to show how different traditions in the region offer unique perspectives on human responsibility amidst the climate emergency. This theme resonates strongly in Barcelona, a city actively pursuing environmental sustainability goals and green urban initiatives.
The annual observance reinforces Barcelona's commitment to fostering understanding and respect among its many faiths. It also encourages dialogue on shared global challenges, promoting a more harmonious future for all residents.
