Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni has marked the 20th anniversary of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), setting out the city’s continued support for science, public health and research on the coast.

Speaking at the event, Collboni described the PRBB as a “cradle for science” and pointed to its location near Barceloneta and Vila Olímpica as part of the city’s wider plan for the waterfront. He said the coastline should be for people, with space for health and research as well as beaches and neighbourhood life.

The mayor highlighted the park’s collaborative model, which brings together eight entities and 1,700 professionals from 65 countries. He also praised PRBB director general Jordi Camí for helping to build that approach over time. The event also included speeches from Núria Montserrat, Minister for Research and Universities, and Laia de Nadal, rector of Pompeu Fabra University (UPF).

Collboni said backing science is, in Barcelona’s case, a choice that serves both people and the planet. That message fits the city’s wider push to strengthen its role in research, health and innovation, with the PRBB playing a visible part in that effort.

The park is now entering a new phase, with plans for an additional building at the Ciutadella del Coneixement. The new facility will focus on precision medicine and add to Barcelona’s biomedical research capacity. For more on the city’s science and innovation coverage, see our Community and Sport pages.
