Barcelona Metro Christmas services are receiving significant reinforcements to handle holiday crowds, with TMB announcing enhanced schedules and uninterrupted New Year’s Eve operations.
The transport authority revealed comprehensive plans this Wednesday to strengthen both metro and bus services throughout the festive period, focusing particularly on busy commercial areas and peak shopping days.
Barcelona Metro Christmas Schedule Enhancements
During December weekends and holidays when shops remain open, TMB will increase train frequency by up to 7.4%, particularly on L1, L2 and L3 lines between 5pm and 9pm.

Furthermore, additional staff and security personnel will be deployed at stations near shopping districts to ensure safe and comfortable travel. This reinforcement comes as Barcelona Metro continues breaking passenger records throughout 2025.
The enhanced Barcelona Metro Christmas schedule includes special arrangements for key dates. On Christmas Eve, buses will operate their final departures from origin stops at 10pm. Meanwhile, regular weekday service will remain unchanged between December 21st and January 7th during the non-teaching period. Additionally, some bus lines will see capacity increases through the deployment of articulated vehicles during peak holiday dates.
According to official TMB announcements, the transport provider will maintain uninterrupted metro service on New Year’s Eve, allowing revellers to travel throughout the night. This continuous operation represents a significant enhancement over regular schedules and demonstrates TMB’s commitment to supporting Barcelona’s festive celebrations.
The Barcelona Metro Christmas improvements extend beyond shopping periods. On Sunday, November 30th, train frequency will increase by 5.7% between 6am and 10am to accommodate the 102nd edition of the Jean Bouin race. Extra staff will also be positioned at stations near the start and finish points of the athletic event to manage passenger flow efficiently.
However, travellers should note that maintenance works will affect L4 and L2 lines during the December holiday period. These Department of Territory projects involve signalling renewal on the yellow L4 line and accessibility improvements at Clot station on the purple L2 line. Consequently, passengers are advised to check alternative routes in advance.
The comprehensive Barcelona Metro Christmas plan demonstrates TMB’s proactive approach to seasonal demand management. By combining increased capacity with extended operating hours, the transport authority aims to provide seamless connectivity throughout the festive season while maintaining safety standards across the network.
