Commuters travelling through three of Barcelona’s busiest interchange stations will now encounter four new massive advertising displays. The installation of these Barcelona metro digital screens represents a significant shift in how the transport network generates non-fare revenue. Indeed, these new fixtures measure up to 16 metres in width.
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has activated the screens at Passeig de Gràcia, Universitat, and Espanya stations. Officials stated that the advertising revenue from these installations is guaranteed at €5.7 million per year. Consequently, this income is fully reinvested into operating the metro service. This approach reduces pressure on public subsidies and fare increases by monetising high-traffic underground spaces. Meanwhile, the push to monetize these spaces comes as the network experiences record passenger numbers, making the advertising locations highly valuable.

Where are the new Barcelona metro digital screens located?
The new displays have been placed in high-visibility zones within the station infrastructure. The largest units are located at the Passeig de Gràcia (L2) station. Here, two separate screens have been installed in the lobbies at platform level. Each of these measures 16 metres wide by 3.5 metres high, dominating the visual space for passengers.
At Universitat (L2), a single horizontal screen measuring 10 metres by 2.5 metres now occupies the station lobby. Furthermore, the installation at Espanya (L1) is positioned directly above the tunnel entrance, measuring 4 metres by 2 metres. These locations were chosen because they serve as critical interchanges with high passenger footfall.
Funding the transport network with Barcelona metro digital screens
The screens are managed by Global, an outdoor advertising company that holds the exclusive rights to commercial space within the network. Under the terms of the contract awarded via public tender in 2023, TMB receives a guaranteed minimum income from these advertising spots. Therefore, this new revenue stream complements other recent investments, such as the major €82.8 million refurbishment programme for trains on other lines.
The current agreement runs for eight years, from 2024 to 2032. Over this period, the advertising deal will generate at least €45.6 million for the transport operator. Additionally, the contract includes a variable component, meaning TMB could earn extra revenue depending on the commercial success of the advertising campaigns displayed.
Digital modernisation strategy for Barcelona metro digital screens
This installation brings the total number of digital advertising supports in the metro network to 250 across 34 stations. The shift from static paper posters to large-format digital screens allows advertisers to run more complex, rotating campaigns. In addition, these campaigns capture passenger attention more effectively. This initiative is part of a wider push to modernise the network, which also includes a pending €300 million contract to supply new metro trains.
According to the official announcement by TMB, the digital transformation of these assets is designed to improve the travel experience. Simultaneously, it maximises the commercial value of station interiors. The new large-format devices are now fully operational across the three designated stations.
