Security guards reported the individual boarded a metro carriage appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He then began threatening users with the large knife. This created a high-risk situation during peak travel hours for commuters. Two security guards, who were changing shifts on the same train, immediately detected the scene. They intercepted the man and kept him controlled as the train continued its journey towards Via Júlia.

Swift Security Intervention

The full intervention occurred at the next stop, Via Júlia station. There, two additional guards joined, bringing the total to four. They successfully disarmed and restrained the individual. The guards then handcuffed him, awaiting the arrival of Mossos d’Esquadra officers. Fortunately, the incident concluded without injuries, which could have escalated significantly.

Union Calls for Enhanced Safety

ADN Sindical Seguridad y Servicios de Cataluña praised the guards’ actions. The union also emphasised one of their main demands: that patrols always be conducted in pairs. A spokesperson for ADN Sindical stated, “The union urges the Administration to address this historical sector demand to ensure safer and more effective interventions in situations like Thursday’s.” This demand reflects a long-standing concern within the private security sector.

Broader Safety Concerns

This incident has highlighted the daily risks faced by private security professionals. They work on public transport systems like the Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) network. The Barcelona Metro, a vital artery for the city, serves millions of residents and tourists annually. Such events underscore ongoing calls for enhanced safety measures for security personnel. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s actions. This ensures public safety remains a top priority across the city’s transport infrastructure.
