Barcelona Metro guards are planning disruptive strikes over the Christmas and New Year period, targeting the busiest travel days of the festive season.
The action, called by Alternativa Sindical, will see security personnel walk out on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

This move escalates an ongoing indefinite strike that began on 23 September, with workers from security firms Prosegur and Securitas demanding better pay and conditions.
Barcelona Metro Guards Escalate Long-Running Dispute
Workers are protesting what they describe as wages frozen for two decades and precarious working conditions. Furthermore, they are urgently calling for an update to what they see as obsolete security protocols within the metro system. The union claims guards face regular aggression and situations that compromise their safety, a situation exacerbated by solo patrols.
Consequently, the strike organisers propose implementing two-agent patrols for security rounds, replacing the current single-worker system. Negotiations are currently between the unions and the private security companies, with Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) not directly involved. The Catalan Department of Labour has, however, established minimum services of 75% during the strikes.
This industrial action coincides with a period of exceptionally high passenger numbers, potentially causing significant disruption for thousands of travellers. The timing is strategic, aiming to maximise pressure during peak festive mobility. According to a recent report on metro passenger records, the network is already under strain from high usage.
The dispute highlights broader tensions within Barcelona’s essential services. The planned strikes on 24, 25, 31 December and 1 January will test the network’s resilience during its most demanding period.
