Barcelona Metro has launched a new virtual reality experience to celebrate its centenary.
The city’s transport operator, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), is offering a free, immersive 10-minute journey through the network’s 100-year history, from its 1920s stations to visions of its future.

The experience will be housed in the Espai Mercè Sala at Diagonal metro station from 30 December until 31 March. Consequently, visitors will need to book one of the 270 daily slots in advance, with up to five tickets available per reservation.
Furthermore, the virtual reality journey is the final major event in a year-long celebration of the metro’s centenary. This follows other popular initiatives, including the opening of the historic Gaudí and Correus ‘ghost’ stations to the public. The exhibition is recommended for visitors aged 10 and over and will operate daily from 10am to 8pm, closing only on 1 and 6 January.
Meanwhile, TMB has emphasised that walk-in bookings may be possible if spaces remain available on the day. The Espai Mercè Sala is located in the connecting corridor between the two Line 5 vestibules at Diagonal station. This innovative project arrives as the city’s transport network faces other changes, including the recently announced planned fare increase for 2026.
According to the official TMB announcement, the experience uses VR headsets to transport users through time. The activity forms a ‘triple finale’ alongside the exhibition of historic trains at La Farinera del Clot and the 100-year retrospective at Palau Robert. Therefore, it represents a significant cultural investment by the transport authority during its anniversary year.
This centenary celebration highlights the metro’s evolution into a backbone of city life. The Barcelona Metro network now carries millions of passengers annually, connecting neighbourhoods and facilitating urban growth. Its history reflects the broader development of the Catalan capital itself over the past century.
