Security workers on Barcelona’s metro network will begin an indefinite strike from tomorrow, citing understaffing, stagnant pay and worsening working conditions.

The walkout has been called by UGT, CCOO and the works council of Barcelona Securitas, who argue that the shortfall in staff compromises both passenger and worker safety. They also denounce the fact that salaries have been frozen for two decades, describing current pay as precarious and out of step with the responsibilities of the job.

Union representatives highlight a sharp rise in physical and verbal assaults against security personnel, claiming that firms Prosegur and Securitas, along with TMB, have consistently refused to address their concerns. Staff also complain of inadequate training for handling critical incidents and a lack of proper rest breaks, which they say has fuelled stress and fatigue.

The strike coincides with La Mercè festivities, when metro use traditionally surges. UGT acknowledged the disruption the strike may cause but said it was necessary to expose the ‘serious labour problems’ faced by security staff after failed negotiations with TMB and its subcontractors.
