Barcelona metro’s had its best August ever. The network carried over 30 million passengers for the first time, hitting 30.3 million according to provisional INE data. That’s a 6% jump from August 2024.

Moreover, this caps the best summer in metro history. June brought 39 million riders, whilst July saw 38.1 million. Three consecutive monthly records. The network’s absolutely flying right now.
Meanwhile, urban bus travel across Catalunya dipped slightly. Numbers fell 0.5% compared to last August, though still exceeded 21 million passengers. It’s the first year-on-year August decline since the pandemic. However, August bus numbers always drop compared to other months.
Barcelona’s urban buses also hit a record, reaching 15 million passengers. That’s a 0.6% increase on August 2024’s 14.9 million. It’s the first time the city’s bus network crossed 15 million in August since INE started tracking in 2012.
Across Spain, public transport carried over 362.4 million passengers in August. That’s a 2.6% annual increase. Urban transport rose 4% to 222.8 million, whilst inter-city services dropped 1.4% to around 118 million.
These numbers show Barcelona’s public transport keeps growing stronger. The summer records prove more people are choosing metro and buses. That’s brilliant news for the city’s sustainability goals. However, it also means busier platforms and vehicles during peak times.
