284 athletes recently tackled 419 steps at Barcelona's deepest metro station, El Coll/La Teixonera. This charity stair climb raised over €17,000 for children with cancer. The Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) Foundation and TransPerfect Mountain Challenge organised this second annual event. It directly benefits the Associació de Familiars i Amics de Nens Oncològics de Catalunya (AFANOC).

Participants ascended the station's 419 steps in two heats, starting from the platform level. El Coll/La Teixonera, on metro Line 5, plunges over 60 metres deep. This makes it the most profound station in the entire TMB network. This presented a demanding route for all competitors. The event's organisers confirmed that donations remain open through a "zero bib" initiative until 31 May, expecting the total amount to increase further.

Challenging Climb for a Cause

The TMB Foundation and TransPerfect Mountain Challenge jointly organised the sprint. Lift company ORONA and railway infrastructure firm PANDROL sponsored the event. The TMB Athletics Club also played a key role. They provided all necessary volunteers to make the challenge possible. Laia Bonet, President of TMB, attended much of the event. She offered support to the participants and highlighted the race's charitable aspect.

After their strenuous climb, athletes enjoyed a solidarity vermouth. Idoni Boncor, a social inclusion catering company, provided the refreshments. They offered a selection of organic, local products made by local cooperatives. This catering choice reflects one of the added values of the TransPerfect Mountain Challenge project. Since 2018, this project has supported AFANOC's work. It organises sporting events that include music and solidarity food.

Race Format and Recognition

The activity ran in groups of 24 people. Participants descended to the starting area by lift. Once at the starting line, runners began the challenge in batches of four. They started at one-minute intervals, following the established protocol. SportIdent technology controlled timing. Electronic cards and validation points at the start and finish recorded performance.

Prizes were awarded across five categories. Two special mentions recognised the youngest and oldest participants. The event also honoured TMB employees who competed. Daniel Benito received the award in the special category for people with disabilities. This recognition highlights the event's inclusive nature.

Ongoing Support for AFANOC

The funds raised directly assist AFANOC. This association supports families and children in Catalonia affected by cancer. The "zero bib" option allows individuals and organisations to contribute even without participating in the climb. This initiative ensures continued support for AFANOC's vital services. The success of this second annual stair climb shows strong community engagement. It also demonstrates TMB's commitment to social causes within Barcelona.

Donations for AFANOC through the "zero bib" remain open until 31 May. This allows more people to contribute to the cause. The event continues to provide critical support for children with cancer and their families across Catalonia.
