Barcelona metro stations were targeted in an early morning robbery spree on Monday, with two key stations on the L1 line suffering break-ins and vandalism.
The incidents occurred at Mercat Nou and Plaça de Sants stations while the facilities were closed and no metro service was running, according to sources from Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB).
At Plaça de Sants, the thieves successfully stole a computer CPU from an office used by TMB staff.

However, at Mercat Nou, they left empty-handed. Both stations, meanwhile, suffered significant damage, including broken office windows.
Security Response to Barcelona Metro Stations Robbery
TMB has already filed a formal complaint with the Mossos d’Esquadra and has provided the police force with security camera footage from the stations. Furthermore, additional sources consulted by the media have revealed that the perpetrators also attempted to force open a reinforced safe and that traces of blood were found inside the offices.
This incident highlights ongoing security challenges for the city’s transport network. Consequently, it follows a recent pattern of disturbances, including a separate major safety clampdown on scooters in Santa Coloma.
The most common damage TMB and other railway companies face is vandalism from graffiti artists. In early December, TMB reported that 358 trains were painted in 2024, with cleaning costs between 2020 and 2025 nearing six million euros.
Nevertheless, the company’s anti-graffiti plan, launched in 2021, has successfully reduced the painted surface area in metro installations by 80% over five years. The number of painted trains has also dropped significantly, from 737 in 2020 to 220 in 2025.
This robbery spree comes just days after the Mossos d’Esquadra arrested two young men, aged 21 and 22, for assaulting a metro security guard in November. The two individuals have previous records for attempted homicide following an assault with an extendable baton.
During that earlier incident, workers were sprayed with pepper spray, and one guard received a severe blow to the head requiring 12 stitches. The judge subsequently prohibited both men from accessing any metro facilities.
Transport authorities are now reviewing security protocols in the wake of these events. Therefore, passengers can expect to see a heightened security presence at key stations as investigations continue into the early morning Barcelona metro stations robbery.
