Barcelona commuters, especially those in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, are set for a summer of metro disruption as Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) carries out major works on several key lines.

The biggest impact will be on Line 1, where service between Florida and Plaça de Sants will close from 17 July to 28 August. TMB President Laia Bonet and Generalitat Mobility and Infrastructure Secretary Manel Nadal presented the summer works plan, with Bonet saying the timing was chosen because user numbers fall in summer.

The Line 1 closure, which has a budget of 11.5 million euros, affects a stretch with an average of 43,000 daily validations in July and 36,000 in August. It will leave a large part of L'Hospitalet, a city of more than 260,000 residents next to Barcelona, without direct metro access on one of its busiest lines.

To reduce the impact, TMB will run an alternative bus service along the affected Line 1 route, with buses every four to nine minutes on weekdays. It also recommends using Line 9 and 10 Sud at Torrassa, Line 5 at Plaça de Sants, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat at Avinguda del Carrilet, and Rodalies at Rambla Just Oliveras. Other works will affect Line 9/10 Nord, with closures between La Sagrera and Bon Pastor for shaft works. The first phase, from 25 June to 30 August, closes La Sagrera to Onze de Setembre, and the second phase, from 31 August to 6 September, extends the closure to Bon Pastor. The project has a budget of 22.6 million euros, and alternative routes include Line 1 at Fondo, Line 2 at Gorg, and bus lines H8, 34 and 126. An alternative bus service will also run.

Line 4 will also be affected at Verdaguer station from 6 July to 30 August. Trains will keep running, but they will not stop at Verdaguer while the first phase of works begins to adapt the interchange for people with reduced mobility. That 8.6 million euro project includes new escalators and lifts. Verdaguer usually handles 6,500 daily validations in July and 4,800 in August, and TMB says 96% of Barcelona metro stations are now adapted for reduced mobility.

Finally, the Line 1 and Line 3 interchange at Catalunya station will be renovated from 6 July to 7 September. The 1.2 million euro project includes renewing interchange elements and removing asbestos, which metro officials say is not currently accessible to the public. TMB says passengers should check its official channels before travelling, and Nadal said drilling on the Line 9 tunnel will finish in 2026, with four new stations opening by late 2027.
