The Barcelona Metro has emerged as the primary alternative for commuters navigating the ongoing crisis in the Rodalies commuter rail network. Consequently, passenger numbers are rising significantly.
According to data released by Barcelona City Council on Tuesday, Metro validations increased by 10 per cent during the first week of February. This compares to the week of 12 January, the period immediately preceding the current railway disruptions.

Barcelona Metro usage surge forces commuters to change habits
The disruption has forced a measurable shift in the daily routines of Barcelona’s residents. Beyond the overall weekly increase, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has recorded daily spikes of between 4 and 5 per cent during the morning rush hour.
Travellers are also starting their journeys earlier to mitigate potential delays. Meanwhile, private vehicle traffic accessing the city has risen by 4 per cent in the early morning slot between 06:00 and 08:00. Officials attribute this specifically to a change in commuter habits. Workers are advancing their arrival times to ensure they reach their destinations.
Metro absorbs the demand from the Rodalies crisis
Laia Bonet, Deputy Mayor for Mobility and President of TMB, noted that despite an agreement to call off a train drivers’ strike, incidents on the railway network persist. She highlighted that the Metro is effectively managing the displaced passengers.
“The Metro continues to be the main response for many people,” Bonet stated. “It is absorbing changes in mobility habits well, and this growth… is consolidating.”
Bonet emphasised the significance of the data. She pointed out that the 10 per cent rise represents a structural shift in how people are moving around the metropolitan area. This shift occurs while the rail issues remain unresolved. In addition, free Rodalies travel has been extended indefinitely.
Bus reinforcements deployed to support the Barcelona Metro usage surge
In addition to the Metro, the urban bus network is being utilised to plug gaps in connectivity. Therefore, TMB has reinforced specific routes to handle the overflow from Rodalies. Notably, line 96, which connects Barcelona with Montcada, has seen increased service.
Bonet confirmed that TMB continues to monitor the situation closely. The authority is ready to reinforce lines where demand outstrips the reduced supply from the suburban rail network.
