Barcelona households are being asked to pay a new bill, as around 240,000 homes across the metropolitan area face a 31 July deadline for the Metropolitan Tax. The payment letters have already been sent to affected properties, according to El Periódico Barcelona.

The charge affects residents in about 30 municipalities across the wider Barcelona metropolitan area. For many households, this is the first time they have been included in the tax collection, even though the Metropolitan Tax itself already exists.

The letters sent to residents set out the amount due for each property and explain how to pay. Households that have received one should check the details carefully and make sure payment is completed before the deadline.

The tax applies to properties within the designated metropolitan zone, and this year’s collection widens the number of homes that must contribute. That means more residents across the Barcelona area will now need to factor the charge into their household budgets.
