Barcelona has secured a one-year loan of two Joan Miró sculptures for public display at Albèniz Palace on Montjuïc. The agreement was signed this week with the Joan Miró Foundation, and it brings Woman and Bird and Ballerina to the site.
Mayor Jaume Collboni and Culture Councillor Xavier Marcé met with Marko Daniel, director of the Joan Miró Foundation, at Albèniz Palace to mark the handover. The foundation owns both works and has placed them on temporary deposit with the City Council.
Woman and Bird, a painted bronze sculpture from 1967, measures 200 x 102 x 77 cm. It will be on view in the Joan Maragall Gardens, which open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 15:00.
Ballerina, a bronze sculpture from 1981, measures 103 x 60 x 28.5 cm. It will be displayed inside Albèniz Palace, with public access during special open days such as La Mercè festival.
Albèniz Palace sits within the Joan Maragall Gardens on Montjuïc, between the National Palace, home to the National Art Museum of Catalonia, and the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium. It was built for Barcelona’s 1929 Universal Exhibition and served as the official residence for the Spanish Royal Family during the event.
Today, the palace is used for social and cultural receptions, as well as official protocol events. The Miró loan adds another public-facing cultural use to the building, with the initial agreement set for one year and annual extensions possible. For readers following Barcelona’s cultural calendar, the city’s Community and Sport pages also track major local events and public venues across the city.
