Barcelona nativity scene will remain indoors at City Hall for the second consecutive year, continuing the council’s revised approach to Christmas traditions. Culture Councillor Xavier Marcé confirmed the decision during Tuesday’s Rights, Social Culture and Sports committee, responding to a request from the PP party to restore the traditional outdoor display.

The municipal government maintains this approach does not break with tradition but rather represents a thoughtful reconsideration of festive arrangements. Furthermore, the council emphasises that the indoor nativity will be significantly larger than last year’s installation. Meanwhile, Plaza Sant Jaume will instead feature special Christmas lighting integrated with the city’s overall festive illumination scheme.

Barcelona Nativity Scene Tradition Evolves

Traditional nativity scenes have been a cornerstone of Barcelona’s Christmas celebrations for generations. Consequently, the decision to move the display indoors has sparked ongoing discussion about preserving cultural heritage versus embracing modern interpretations.

The PP party has repeatedly requested the restoration of the outdoor nativity as a symbolic preservation of cultural traditions and Barcelona’s identity. However, the council maintains that keeping the nativity scene inside City Hall while enhancing Plaza Sant Jaume’s lighting creates a balanced approach. Therefore, visitors can experience both traditional and contemporary elements during the festive season.

Last year’s alternative installation featured a massive nine-metre diameter star that became the square’s central Christmas symbol. The impressive structure weighed 2.5 tonnes and attracted numerous visitors despite the absence of the traditional outdoor nativity. Accordingly, this innovative approach combined festive spirit with modern design elements.

Council officials indicate this year’s arrangements will follow the same successful format as 2024. The traditional nativity will be accessible inside the town hall, allowing residents and visitors to experience this important cultural element. Additionally, the outdoor space will feature decorative lighting that complements the city’s broader festive atmosphere.

This evolving approach to Christmas celebrations reflects Barcelona’s ongoing dialogue between tradition and innovation. The city continues to honour its cultural heritage while exploring new ways to celebrate the festive season that resonate with contemporary audiences.
