Barcelona bike lanes have expanded significantly with two new sections opening in Gràcia and Eixample districts.

The city council’s comprehensive maintenance plan has delivered crucial connections that complete missing links in the cycling network.

The newly paved section along Passeig de Gràcia now extends to Carrer Bonavista, creating a safe connection between the Diagonal and Gràcia’s existing cycling routes.

This 47-metre extension eliminates a dangerous gap where cyclists previously had to merge with vehicle traffic near an underground car park entrance.

Barcelona Bike Lanes Transform Urban Mobility

Furthermore, the new section integrates seamlessly with Gràcia’s traffic-calmed zones through a dedicated 30km/h route. This completes pedestrianisation works that began last summer, transforming the Jardinets de Gràcia area into a unified platform for pedestrians.

The improvements include removing sea-bound traffic lanes, creating new flower beds, and installing urban furniture. Additionally, workers have placed 10 new benches and 17 wooden slatted chairs to enhance the public space.

Meanwhile, the second project addresses the long-awaited completion of the Mallorca street bike lane between Calabria and Viladomat. This section forms part of the crucial Besòs-Llobregat connection that spans the city horizontally.

The delay in completing this segment resulted from rehabilitation works at the Estel building, formerly a telephone company headquarters. The construction had occupied the public space designated for the bike lane until early October.

According to recent mobility legislation, cities must prioritise sustainable transport infrastructure. Consequently, Barcelona continues to expand its cycling network as part of broader urban transformation efforts.

The Mallorca section will become operational once traffic signalling and road marking works conclude. This final piece completes the cycling axis that was initially constructed in 2023 but left this segment pending due to the building works.

These developments represent ongoing progress in Barcelona’s commitment to sustainable mobility. The city continues to enhance cycling infrastructure while improving pedestrian spaces and traffic calming measures.
