Barcelona traffic safety measures are being urgently implemented after two fatal bus accidents claimed the lives of minors within a single week.

The city council has announced immediate infrastructure improvements at key locations where the tragedies occurred, including speed cameras at Diagonal Avenue and Gran Via de Carles III intersection and sidewalk widening at Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 595.

Furthermore, Deputy Mayor for Security Albert Batlle confirmed that both drivers tested negative for alcohol and drugs following the accidents.

Batlle emphasised that initial inspections revealed no deficiencies in signage or visibility at the accident sites. However, he stated the council remains “obliged to study measures to reinforce road safety” following the deaths. Meanwhile, the opposition PP party has called for protective barriers similar to those used near schools to be installed outside the Coliseum theatre.

The recent transport safety concerns in Barcelona have highlighted broader issues within the city’s mobility network. Additionally, PP councillor Sonia Devesa has urged implementing safety protocols and technical reviews following accidents, plus medical evaluations and guarantees for driver rest periods.

According to official statements from the Barcelona City Council, both cases remain under judicial investigation. Therefore, specific causes cannot be disclosed until the judicial secrecy is lifted. The council has expressed consternation over the incidents while balancing the need for thorough investigation with immediate safety improvements.

These Barcelona traffic safety enhancements represent the city’s ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable road users. Moreover, the measures align with broader urban mobility strategies aimed at reducing accidents and improving pedestrian infrastructure throughout Barcelona’s transport network.
